{Fervent} Strategy 5 – Your Past

20161029_202339I’m currently reading Fervent by Priscilla Shirer. I haven’t posted about every strategy (chapter) but this one hit so close to home that I wanted to share. (If I post about the other previous topics, I’ll include them in order 🙂 )

The enemy has a way of bringing up your past in such a manner, that you don’t even see it coming until  your ridden with guilt. He knows what it does to you and celebrates every time he gets you to think about your past failures.

When Priscilla talks about a certain path she used to take in Houston as she was heading down an expressway, the flashbacks start flooding in about her younger days and choices she’d made. Guilt, shame and anxiety had set in. But then God whispers to her in the midst of that moment, reassuring her that He is now leading her paths and that she moved beyond that point of shame and didn’t have to carry that pain anymore.

I was on a train ride into work when I was reading this part and it brought tears to my eyes. I immediately reflected on my own life and the guilt I’ve felt from the mistakes I’ve made. Failures on my path. Living with guilt is one of the worst things people can do. Regret. It just eats away at you. And because it’s based on the past, there’s really no way to ever break free of it. Unless…unless you give it up to God. 2 Cor. 5:17 states – Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. God has been SO merciful to me I couldn’t help it at that moment but to let the tears flow.

What a beautiful promise! We no longer need to walk around with the guilt and shame of our past mistakes no matter what thoughts or flashbacks come to mind. And if God doesn’t judge you, don’t let others judge and shame you into feeling like you are undeserving of God’s grace. Stand tall, my friend! Break free from your past and lift your head high! <3
